A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked a Louisiana law that would require the Ten Commandments to be displayed in school classrooms by Jan. 1.

Lawyers for the state of Louisiana are asking a federal appeals court in New Orleans to immediately block a judge’s ruling ordering education officials to tell all local districts that a law requiring schools to post the Ten Commandments in classrooms

An order was issued this morning by Federal Judge John deGravelles granting a preliminary injunction against Louisiana's Ten Commandments for schools law.

The federal judge who made the decision to temporarily block the law which would require public classrooms in Louisiana to display the 10 commandments said in his ruling that the law would not only isolate students who are not Christian,

A new Louisiana requirement that the Ten Commandments be displayed in all public classrooms is “unconstitutional on its face,” a federal judge ruled Tuesday, ordering state education officials not to take steps to enforce it and to notify all local school boards in the state of his decision.

The law "is not neutral toward religion," wrote Judge John W. deGravelles, who ruled that the law was "facially unconstitutional."
